Founder Meetup Checklist: Before, During, and After

Choose one useful objective before the event, prepare a short introduction, ask context questions in the room, and follow up while the conversation is still clear.

Before: choose one useful objective

Decide what would make the event worthwhile before you arrive. A useful objective is narrow: understand how two founders handle early customer interviews, meet one person building in a related market, or learn which recurring local room is worth returning to. “Meet everyone” is not an objective because it gives you no way to choose a conversation.

Read the event description and organiser page. If the room cannot plausibly help with the objective, skip it. Protecting an evening from the wrong event is part of good networking.

Before: prepare a twenty-second introduction

Use three parts: what you are building, who it helps, and the decision you are working through now. For example: “I am building a founder-discovery app for people who move between cities. I am currently testing whether curated events or one-to-one discovery is the better starting point.” That gives the other person something concrete to ask about.

Do not memorise a pitch. Prepare enough structure that nerves do not turn the introduction into a product tour.

During: ask context questions

Start with the work in front of the person, not their title. Ask what they are trying to change, what is uncertain, or why they chose this event. Listen for a shared problem or a useful contrast. If there is no overlap, a brief friendly conversation is still complete; it does not need to become a calendar invite.

During: leave room for a second conversation

End while the exchange still has energy. If there is a clear next step, state it: send the resource you mentioned, make the relevant introduction, or ask one follow-up question over coffee. Exchange contact details only when there is something specific to continue.

After: follow up within one day

Write while both people can still place the conversation. Mention the exact topic, deliver anything you promised, and make one next step visible. “Great meeting you” is polite but easy to ignore; “Here is the onboarding example we discussed” restores the context.

A compact checklist

  • Choose one outcome for the event.
  • Prepare a short, conversational introduction.
  • Bring one useful question rather than a sales pitch.
  • Ask what the other founder is working through now.
  • Write down only real promises and next steps.
  • Follow up within one day with the missing context included.
  • Return if the room was useful; skip it next time if it was not.
